Scenario 1: barking at skateboards — respondent or operant?
A bark triggered by fear of moving skateboards is not the same problem as demand barking at your hands. Decide first whether emotion or a history of reinforcement drives the behavior, because that choice changes the whole plan.
Worked case: a client dog lunges and barks whenever a skateboard rolls past on the street. The owner, wanting a quick fix, squirts water each time the barking starts, treating the barking as an operant behavior to be suppressed. This is the plausible mistake. It ignores that the trigger itself produces an involuntary, emotional reaction, and adding a startling spray does nothing to change what the skateboard now predicts. The dog may also start associating the street with two bad things instead of one.
The better decision is to identify the respondent component first. Work at a distance where the dog notices the skateboard but can still eat and respond to a known cue, then pair skateboards with food while gradually reducing that distance — counterconditioning combined with desensitization — and manage exposure in the meantime. The why: suppressing the sound of barking leaves the underlying association intact, while a plan built on the classification addresses it. Practicing this reasoning chain in writing is what makes it available under exam conditions.
Name the quadrant from the operation, not from sympathy
Identify the behavior, then the consequence, then whether a stimulus was added or removed and whether the behavior rises or falls. That sequence, not the dog's apparent mood or the handler's intent, assigns the quadrant.
Apply the sequence mechanically to any case. A dog whines at the dinner table and guests feed it; whining increases, and food was added, so this is positive reinforcement. The same dog jumps on an arriving guest and the owner turns away, ending all attention; jumping decreases over the following weeks, and attention was removed, so this is negative punishment. Notice that the handler's feelings about the behavior never entered the analysis. The consequence, its direction of change, and the add-versus-remove question carried the whole classification.
Two traps deserve dedicated drills. First, negative punishment is not extinction: turning away cuts off attention contingent on jumping, whereas extinction means a reinforcer the dog had learned to expect simply stops being delivered. Second, the pleasantness of a stimulus tells you nothing by itself; pressure that releases when a dog moves forward can act as negative reinforcement even though nobody would call pressure pleasant. Drill ten household examples per quadrant until the add-or-remove question becomes automatic.

The why: conditioning is time-sensitive, and the learner associates the marker with whatever is happening at the moment it occurs, not with the handler's intention.
Acquisition tools differ in how criteria are set, and scenario answers should name the distinction. Luring uses food to guide the movement; shaping reinforces successive approximations toward a target behavior; capturing reinforces a behavior the dog offers spontaneously. They differ in how much the learner must offer and how precisely the handler must plan steps. A dog with a low offer rate may stall in a shaping plan, while a lure that stays visible too long can become a crutch. Being able to say which tool fits a described case, and why, is the applied version of knowing their definitions.
Desensitization and counterconditioning share a threshold
Systematic desensitization reduces reactivity through gradual, controlled exposure; counterconditioning pairs the trigger with something that changes its meaning. Both depend on staying under threshold, which makes distance and trigger intensity the key controls.
Keep the three nearby concepts separate. Habituation is the simple waning of a response to a repeatedly presented harmless stimulus, such as a dog gradually ignoring a clock tick. Desensitization deliberately arranges graduated exposure to a triggering stimulus at low intensity. Counterconditioning pairs that trigger with something that changes the dog's emotional response to it, and the two are commonly combined as DS/CC. Scenario items can hinge on naming which of these a plan actually describes, so test yourself on whether a described plan changes emotion, merely reduces sensitivity, or relies on ordinary waning.
The practical rule for both is that the dog must stay under threshold: able to notice the trigger yet still take food and respond to known cues. Observable signs that threshold has been crossed include refusing food, unable to respond to a familiar cue, or escalating immediately when the trigger appears. The better decision in any case where those signs appear is to increase distance or lower intensity before continuing. The why: proceeding closer while the dog is over threshold risks the trigger predicting the pairing going wrong, which is a planning failure regardless of how sound the rest of the program looks on paper.

The plan also only controls one person's response while every guest's arrival keeps paying the dog.
The better decision starts with the function: arrival attention reinforces jumping. Manage arrivals with a leash or barrier so jumping cannot pay off, differentially reinforce four feet on the floor or a station on a mat, and coach every guest to ignore jumping completely so the reinforcer truly goes away. The why: the plan now targets the function and offers an achievable alternative, which is a different answer than suppression.
