Turning the back removes the owner’s attention (a desired stimulus) to decrease the jumping behavior, which is negative punishment. Clicking and treating adds a desired stimulus (food) to increase the four-on-the-floor behavior, which is positive reinforcement.

Karen Pryor defines complete stimulus control through four specific rules: the behavior always occurs when cued, never occurs when not cued, never occurs in response to a different cue, and no other behavior occurs in response to the specific cue. The other options describe general training milestones or incorrect definitions of stimulus control.

The dog walking away indicates the criteria were raised too quickly and the rate of reinforcement dropped too low. According to the laws of shaping, you should relax criteria or break the behavior into smaller increments so the learner can earn reinforcement and stay engaged.

In classical counterconditioning, the scary stimulus must reliably predict the arrival of the positive stimulus (treats). Presenting the clippers first, followed by treats, and stopping the treats when the clippers disappear creates a clear contingency where the clippers predict good things.

A cue should be added only when the behavior is fully formed and predictable; otherwise, you risk attaching the cue to an incomplete or sloppy version of the behavior. Adding it at the beginning associates the cue with the initial, unrefined approximations.

An extinction burst occurs when a previously reinforced behavior no longer yields the expected reinforcement, leading the animal to try harder, louder, or with new variations before the behavior eventually decreases. Spontaneous recovery happens after a behavior has already been extinguished and a period of time has passed.

In TAGteach, a tag point must be stated in the positive (what to do, not what to avoid), be observable, and ideally be five words or less. ‘Palm flat’ meets all these criteria, whereas the others contain negative phrasing, explanations, or multiple instructions.

Backchaining involves teaching the last behavior in the chain first, so the animal is always moving toward the most heavily reinforced and familiar part of the chain. In a retrieve, the final step is holding the dumbbell in front and releasing it to the handler.

When a lure is used for too many repetitions, the sight of the food becomes the cue (or part of the cue) for the behavior. To resolve this, the handler must fade the lure by using an empty hand to prompt the behavior, then reinforcing with a treat hidden elsewhere.

Variable ratio schedules reinforce behavior after an unpredictable number of responses, similar to a slot machine. This unpredictability builds strong persistence, making the behavior highly resistant to extinction.

In the ABC model, the consequence maintaining the behavior is the mail carrier leaving (the removal of an aversive stimulus), which negatively reinforces the barking. The dog learns that barking successfully drives the ‘intruder’ away.

In KPA methodology, the click serves as an event marker and a release. It tells the animal ‘what you were doing at that exact moment earned a reward,’ and the animal is not required to hold the position after the click to receive the treat.

A poisoned cue occurs when a cue becomes associated with aversive events or a mixture of positive and aversive consequences. This creates emotional conflict in the learner, often resulting in slow, hesitant, or avoidance behaviors.

Targeting is an operant behavior that gives the dog a clear, positive task to perform. It allows handlers to move dogs into potentially scary situations voluntarily, utilizing the positive reinforcement history of the target to override mild hesitation.

The Premack Principle states that a higher-probability behavior (chasing squirrels) can be used to reinforce a lower-probability behavior (sitting). The opportunity to engage in the desired activity acts as the reinforcer for the required task.

Systematic desensitization involves exposing the learner to a fear-inducing stimulus at a level low enough that it does not trigger a fear response, and gradually increasing the intensity of the stimulus. This is often paired with counterconditioning (feeding treats) to change the emotional response.

Capturing relies on the animal initiating the behavior, which often results in a strong, enthusiastic response once reinforced. Because no lure is used, the trainer skips the difficult step of fading the prompt, avoiding the risk of the lure becoming the cue.

Karen Pryor’s 10th Law of Shaping is ‘Quit while you’re ahead.’ Ending a session immediately after a breakthrough or a series of excellent responses ensures the learner remembers the success and stays eager for the next session. Pushing for more often leads to fatigue and degraded performance.

To transfer a cue, the new cue must precede the old cue. The sequence is ‘New Cue -> Pause -> Old Cue -> Behavior -> Consequence.’ Over time, the animal anticipates the old cue and performs the behavior upon hearing the new cue, allowing the trainer to fade the old visual signal.

KPA-CTPs are taught to apply the same positive reinforcement principles to human learners as they do to animals. By marking and reinforcing the client’s correct behavior (relaxed arm/loose leash), the trainer builds the client’s skills and confidence without the use of punishment or nagging.
