Leaving hair on the forechest while tightening the point of the shoulder creates the visual illusion of a deeper chest and proper shoulder layback. Leaving hair longer over a steep croup fills in the structural deficit, creating the illusion of a level topline and a higher, more correct tail set. Shaving the area or leaving the withers high while tightening the croup will only exaggerate the steep slope and low tail set.

‘Walking dandruff’ is the classic sign of Cheyletiella mites, a highly contagious zoonotic parasite that requires veterinary treatment and immediate isolation to protect the salon. Seborrhea does not move, Demodex is microscopic and not visible to the naked eye, and administering oral medications is practicing veterinary medicine without a license.

Shears with more teeth (blenders/thinners) take less hair per cut, allowing for delicate blending and erasing of harsh lines. Shears with fewer, wider teeth (chunkers) take out larger sections of hair, making them ideal for rapid bulk removal and heavy texturizing without leaving blunt scissor marks.

Bulk-thinning the undercoat provides the requested hygiene and ease of maintenance while allowing the longer guard hairs to lay flat and preserve the breed’s correct silhouette. Shaving creates unnatural gaps in the coat, blunt scissoring ruins the natural lay of the hair, and chemical depilatories are unsafe and inappropriate for canine grooming.

Styptic powder is a safe and effective hemostatic agent for minor capillary bleeding in a salon setting, and owners must always be informed of any injuries. Alcohol causes severe pain and damages tissue, tourniquets risk limb loss if applied incorrectly, and cauterization or supergluing are veterinary procedures that groomers should never attempt.
